After transforming from Nepal Telecommunication Corporation into Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited in 2061 B.S (2004 A.D), Nepal Telecom have been thriving to provide the various types of telecommunication services throughout the country.
With more than 2 crore 23 lakhs (22,328,879) users nationwide(as of May 2020), NT have been providing more than dozens different services in different category. From fixed telephone, mobile telephone, email/internet to broadband services they have their continuous dedication to customer needs. Indeed, some lags are always within with them which they always carry.

Ok, Lets divide it under different category and know each about them.
A. Fixed Telephone Services:
Under this fixed telephone services, NTC have been providing the below different services:
In general it is known as landline. It is known as “Public Switched Telephone Network”. In this services , a copper wire is used to connect the devices with the nearest exchange. Nepal Telecom have total 664,863 users using this services. Also Nepal Telecom is the only and one telecom who is providing this services.
VSAT is known as Very small Aperture Antenna. It is similar to the dish home but it have its own control and other various differences. Along with Nepal Telecom, there are other 7 licensed users making total 8 according to NTA. In Nepal Telecom there are 581 subscriptions of the VSAT. VSAT is put under fixed indeed the connectivity is via satellite but once it is mounted it cannot be moved here and there.
Many of us are unknown about this services. It is known as Wireless Local Loop. If you have been during the Maoist insurgency period, you have known this better. It was known as cordless at that time and was used to connect the very remote and hilly places.
Here, local telephone or landline is transferred to another place with wireless signal. Then the wireless signal is received and used as a landline thus providing the communication.
It is used in long distance because the copper wire connection is not feasible for this. It is target for small users. Nepal telecom is also the single one who is providing this services. Currently there are 118,948 users using this services mostly in remote areas.
B. Mobile telephone Services
This is the list which is used for basic mobile telephone services only.
GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communication. It is the basic digital form of mobile communication technique built for 2G connectiion. The bandwidth 2G runs is of 900 MHz and 1800 MHz.
Currently Nepal Telecom have 19,865,286 users using the GSM services which was started in 2003. Please don’t confuse that GSM is for 2G only while other like 3G/4G/5G is of other services though they might use the 900 and 1800 band.
CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access. It is also one of the basic mobile telephone services provided by the Nepal Telecom.
It was one of the widely used services but with adaptation of GSM, this services have been now discarded worldwide. However, NT have been providing this services. There are total 1,679,201 subscribers of CDMA and NT is the sole provider of this services in Nepal.
C. Broadband services:
The broadband services is means to provide high speed internet connectivity. There are many broadband services provided by the Telecom telecom which are listed below:
It stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line used to connect to internet. It is asymmetric because the downlink and uplink bandwidth is different. ADSL allows more data to be sent over existing copper telephone lines (POTS/PSTN), when compared to traditional modem lines.
Nepal Telecom have 955,446 users who is using this services. Also NT is the single operator in Nepal who is providing this services.
It is the latest generation fiber technology for the internet connection. It’s full form is Fiber to the Home. Here Fiber uses light to transmit the data in the speed of light. It is wired technology with the fast speed till now.
Nepal Telecom have been providing this fiber services before a year ago to the general people. However, the coverage is very less. They have their target to the limited places or we can say they are focused only in the main cities. There are total 97,425 subscribers of Nepal telecom using this services. But in whole Nepal with constituting ISP’s FTTH services there are 754,378 subscribers.
8) Internet Lease Line:
A leased line is a dedicated communication channel that interconnects two or more sites or places. The communication channel may be optical fiber, copper wire or coaxial cable. It is given in contract or on monthly fees, where customers can transfer their data via this leased line. It is like renting a home. Home is made by Nepal Telecom and customers reside in home by paying the monthly rent or yearly rent.
Leased line have been a good practice in Nepal. Nepal Telecom have 1,061 leased line customers. Aside Nepal telecom, other organization like Nepal Electricity Authority, and local company are also providing the leased line services to the needy party.
9) Wi MAX:
WiMAX is the “Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access”. It is an IP based Wireless Broadband Access Technology where user can browse fastest internet. It is considered as a competitive to 4G but due to different technology, Wi MAX didn’t get much popular in Nepal. Read our blog on “Where NT Wi MAX failed” to get insight about this service in Nepal.
Nepal Telecom have 89,753 subscribers of Wi MAX. But many of the users have discontinued this services but still NT is providing this service. NT is also the sole provider of Wi MAX in Nepal.
3G is the third generation mobile telecommunication services. It is used for fast internet which earlier 2G/2.5G could not provide. It is used for live gaming, live TV, video calling and many more.
Nepal Telecom have 8,478,884 users who have subscribed the 3G services which was started in 2011. In Nepal beside Nepal Telecom, Ncell and Smarttel is aldo providing this services.
11) 4G LTE:
4G LTE is the fourth generation mobile telecommunication services known as Long Term Evolution which is now the most popular in the world. LTE is not actually the 4G because the 4G speed is very high regarding to LTE.
Nepal Telecom is also providing the latest 4G LTE services in Nepal by 2017 but they haven’t expanded as other telecom operator did. Earlier it was limited in Kathmandu and Pokhara. But now they have been expanding this services. The total subscribers of NTC is of 842,543 as of May 2020. By end of 2020, they might reach to most of all the places.
EVDO stands for Evolution-Data Optimized is a telecommunication standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. This service was used to provide the fast internet upto 3 Mbps. There are 136,573 subscribers of EVDO which was launched in 2010.
13) Wi-Fi Hotspot:
Nepal Telecom have also been providing the hotspot services in areas like hospital, colleges, temples and crowded places. Users can avail the free wifi as well as the paid services from this hotspot. With the internet penetration increasing with broadband services, NT-Hotspot is becoming fade now.
