NTA warns for illicit use of internet in Himalayan Base Camps in Nepal

Nepal Telecommunication Authority-NTA, governing authority for telecom and ISP’s in Nepal have issued a notice warning for illicit use of internet in high himalayan base camps in Nepal.

According to NTA, mountaineering company in Nepal have been using foreign satellite in base camps to provide internet services to their clients. Further insisting, using of foreign satellite without proper license and approval from government and NTA is illegal in Nepal.

In addition, using without prior approval will lead to monitory and legal penalty and issues based to NTA rule.

What does NTA do in Nepal?

Being a regulatory body, NTA is responsible for overseeing and managing the telecommunications and ISP’s sector in the country.

Here are the main functions of NTA:

  1. Regulation and Supervision: Ensures fair competition among telecom operators and regulates their services.
  2. Licensing: Issues licenses to telecom service providers, including ISPs, mobile operators, and others.
  3. Policy Implementation: Implements government policies related to telecommunications.
  4. Spectrum Management: Allocates and manages radio frequencies used for mobile, radio, and internet services.
  5. Consumer Protection: Handles consumer complaints and ensures quality of service.
  6. Infrastructure Development: Promotes expansion of telecom services in rural and remote areas.
  7. Digital Inclusion: Supports projects to increase internet access, such as the RTDF (Rural Telecommunications Development Fund).
  8. Cybersecurity and Regulation of Online Services: Involved in digital governance, safe internet practices, and sometimes in regulating content/services.
