The Nepal government have banned the unregistered social media from 3rd September (19 Bhadra 2082 ). This decision came out after government appeal to registered those social media multiple times but social media giants have ignored the government appeal.
The social media like Facebook, Instagram parent company Meta was informed multiple times however they neglected the government laws to register. Earlier social media TikTok was banned and after registration TikTok is smoothly running in Nepal. Likewise Viber is also registered and is operating smoothly.
Earlier this month, Telegram app was banned as it was severely used for fraud. Now, Telegram company have submitted to register in the Nepal government.
The list of social media banned in Nepal are:
Facebook – A global social networking platform for connecting with friends, sharing updates, photos, videos, and joining groups.
YouTube – The largest video-sharing platform where users can upload, watch, stream, and monetize videos.
WhatsApp – A messaging app for text, voice, video calls, and file sharing, widely used worldwide.
Instagram – A photo and video sharing app known for reels, stories, and influencer-driven content.
Snapchat – A messaging app focused on disappearing messages, AR filters, and short video snaps.
Line – A popular Asian messaging app with free calls, stickers, games, and mobile payments.
IMO – A simple messaging and video calling app, often used where internet speeds are slower.
Messenger – Facebook’s standalone messaging app for chatting, voice/video calls, and group conversations.
Twitter (X) – A microblogging and social platform for real-time news, trends, and discussions.
LinkedIn – A professional networking platform for career development, resumes, and business connections.
Reddit – A community-based platform of forums (“subreddits”) for discussions, news, and niche interests.
Discord – A communication app popular among gamers and communities for chat, voice, and video.
Pinterest – A visual discovery platform where users save and share ideas through images (“pins”).
Signal – A secure, privacy-focused messaging app with strong end-to-end encryption.
Threads – Instagram’s text-based conversation app, built to rival Twitter (X).
WeChat – China’s super app for messaging, payments, shopping, and services.
Quora – A Q&A platform where users ask questions and share knowledge or expertise.
Tumblr – A microblogging site for creative posts, short blogs, memes, and fandoms.
Clubhouse – A drop-in audio chat app for live discussions and conversations.
Mastodon – A decentralized social network alternative to Twitter (X).
Rumble – A video platform gaining popularity as an alternative to YouTube.
MeWe – A privacy-friendly social network with no ads or tracking.
VK – Russia’s largest social network, similar to Facebook.
Zalo – Vietnam’s leading messaging app with chat, calls, and local services.
Soul – A social networking app from China focused on personality-based matching.
HamroPatro – A Nepali app featuring calendar, news, astrology, radio, and social interaction tools.
Out of all social media-Facebook, Instagram have one of the largest userbase in Nepal.
While Hamropatro, being developed for mostly Nepali audience is not registered in Nepal as so Nepal government have urge to register at Nepal.
